I switched to Movable Type to publish our church's website because of the recommendations and ideas from this website. Thanks a ton, Dean! Your insights are right on. When the content is available (usually as PowerPoints), I transform it into a workable web document and get it on our site readily, easily, and quickly. It took me a while to learn MT, but I love it and would never go back to FrontPage, Publisher, or any other WYSIWYG programs. Thanks for your tips, Dean. You inspired me to "heal our church website".

Scott Houchin replied to my comment about laypersons and I agree that just posting the info is GREAT!

I'm trying to say that 1) Timely is not happening, 2) They want me to INTERVIEW them for the DATA and have someone else (me) WRITE it into information. 3) They want current information on the website, but won't commit to creating the content on a regular basis, so is a blog solultion a good choice in this situation? As much as I think content is important, it needs a commitment to keep current or you need to go with a static site.

Russ Weitz asks how we deal with our laypeople that just want to provide content and have someone else post it.

When that happens, I say "halleluja! halleluja!" and just post it for them. Getting people to provide meaningful and relevent content in a timely manner is a significantly more difficult problem than getting it posted.

Lakeshore is a very high-stress church for those participating in ministry. While we have very high percentages of attenders involved in ministry, we still have an awful lot of people doing an awful lot of things. My desire is to have one or two "data entry operators" that don't need any writing or creative skills, but can just put data into the system.

Ya know I love to read all this technical stuff, but my real problems come in when I try to bring those "Church Secretaries" and "Laypersons" online. What they really want is someone to suck the data from them, write it up, and post it on the web as information.

How do all of you deal with the people side of the equation?

I opted to go with WordPress too for my church site, ( http://www.stphils.org.au/discuss/ ) it's a really great tool! There is a tutorial I saw just yesterday to help you turn WordPress into a semi-CMS. looks quite useful, could work well on small sites.

And I'm getting the front page download too, with IE and Firefox (sent you an email dean).
