Ezboo Redux too!

Back in December of ’02, I mentioned in passing a nice little PHP/MySQL-based web stats program named EZBoo.

Making sure to practice what I preach, I’m using it on the RBC Redux. It is indeed getting the job done for me. Best part is, by using it, I was immediately able to see my sites getting hammered by two bots of questionable intent. This immediately gave me another opportunity to practice what I preach and employ some of Mark Pilgrim’s advice in his article ‘How to block spambots, ban spybots, and tell unwanted robots to go to … er, H-E-double-hockey-sticks.

Well, actually, I had already that ‘particular Pilgrimage‘ so it really meant just saying goodbye to the following bandwidth bandits via my .htaccess file:

  • RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} LinkWalker [OR]
  • RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} QuepasaCreep [OR] #

One other thing, I’ve noticed the nightly spam at RBC has been radically reduced since implementing these features, even more so since the new site uses obfuscation in combination with Javascript for email links — and/or form for those who need to legitimately contact us. I guess I just got tired of all those ads for breast enlargement!-)

  1. Does EZBoo read the page title (vs. just the URL) while logging?

One of the challenges of running on pMachine is looking at my site logs, trying to figure out what content matches up with a particular query string.
